DSE eye tests: what employers ask us

Do employers have to pay for DSE eye tests?
Yes. Under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, employers must provide an eye test for display screen users who request one, and pay for it. If the test shows glasses are needed specifically for screen work, the employer pays for a basic pair too.
Who counts as a DSE user?
Anyone who uses display screen equipment (computers, laptops and tablets) daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more. In a typical office, that's most of the team.
How often do DSE eye tests need repeating?
At the interval your optometrist recommends, typically every two years, or sooner if an employee reports problems. We keep the records and remind you when your team's re-tests fall due.
What does our business receive after the visit?
Individual prescriptions for each employee plus a summary report for your HR records: evidence of your DSE compliance from a single on-site visit.
